We started an exciting part of our day....Writer's Workshop! Each kindergartner has a special Drawing and Writing Journal. These journals are a place for each student to tell his/her stories! They can draw pictures and add words to tell their readers about things they have done. Their stories this week included trips to the Mall of America, tales of bugging little brothers, and a description of a fun waffle breakfast. Their stories can be about a big event, or something small that happened that morning. You can talk with your kindergartner about what story he/she might want to tell next in his/her journal! After each workshop, we have sharing time. Students get to tell their story to a partner, and some even get to show their work on the smartboard and teach the class! Writer's Workshop is a fun and important part of our literacy learning!

We have been learning about shapes and patterns in math! Each kindergartner made a quilt square out of triangles, and we will be putting the quilt together soon. When we finish a project like the quilt squares, kindergartners get to look at books while we wait for everyone to be done. They LOVE this time to explore new stories!
Climb Theater visited Northview and presented a play on bullying. We learned about standing up for ourselves and others. We learned the difference between a bad choice and bullying (bullies make those mean choices every day). Our class came up with these important lessons and wrote them down after the play. See the chart we made below!
We had our first library day with Miss Joanna! Each kindergartner will get to bring a book home and return in the following week. We will visit the library each Friday. Your child can return his/her book any day of the week. Thank you for taking care of these special books at your home!
We have been reading many stories about the gingerbread man and even got to make one of our own. When we went to pick him up at the kitchen....he was gone! With help from lots of friends at Northview, we tracked him down in the library. He was delicious! We made gingerbread men to hang in our classroom, and we wrote a class book about the gingerbread man that your child will bring home soon to share!
The first day of Kindergarten...it's such an exciting milestone! There were some nervous faces (amongst the adults) and lots of smiles. :) Our class did an amazing job while we learned about how to be a kindergartner!
