We have been busy with Writer's Workshop in kindergarten! We learned that writing stories starts with telling stories. Students have been taking turns sitting in my rocking chair and telling the whole class a story about something that he/she has done. We have heard a story about a haircut, snuggling with a brother, a fun ride down an alpine slide and many more. This celebration of oral story telling helps children understand that we all have stories to share. Last week, we started writing these stories in our Drawing and Writing Journals. Each child chose a story to "write" and drew a picture of it. We are working on adding details, and we will eventually be adding words to our stories. After each workshop, we share our work. A few students share with the whole class, and then everyone shares with a partner. They love teaching others about their work, and I love seeing the wonderful lessons they learn from their peers' work.
