We had so many fun characters from books in our classroom today! Thank you for your help with this exciting day!

Our new unit of study is our first science unit....Weather! I hope your little scientist can share some of what we have learned. We have been studying nonfiction texts and noticing how they are different from fiction texts. We have learned about the water cycle, meteorologists, and several types of weather. Your child might be interested in observing the weather or clouds at home. You could look up the temperature, and go outside to see what that temperature feels like. When is started pouring outside today, all of my meteorologists had to run to the window and study the weather! It is fun to see them so excited to learn! Check out our R.A.N. (Reading and Analyzing Nonfiction) chart in the photo below. The five sections on this chart include: Prior Knowledge, Confirmed Thinking, Misconceptions, New Learning, and Wonderings. We visit the chart often to see if we can add to our new learning, or if our research has confirmed our prior knowledge. The kindergartners do the thinking, and I do the writing on the chart. I am amazed at what these kindergartners observe and learn each day!
Each day, we meet as a group by our calendar and keep track of our days in many different ways. We use ten frames, weather charts, tally marks, number strips, links, and base ten blocks to build our number sense and math skills. After we have completed our Number Corner time by the calendar, we go back to our table spots and get out our calendar binders. We do many of the same activities in our binders that we do as a group, and we also learn a new song each month. The binders reinforce the number sense we work on as a group. So many math skills are fit into this short time!
We read a story called Duck for President, by Doreen Cronin. We decided to have our own election for president. The candidates were Duck and Farmer Brown. It was a close race, but Duck won by 1 vote! The kindergartners had to register, fill out their secret ballot, tally the votes, celebrate if their candidate won, and be okay if their candidate didn't.
This morning, we had the opportunity to be part of a hand washing demonstration in our classroom. Mrs. Lynn Kokal from St. Paul Children’s Hospital was here to teach all of us the importance of washing our hands well to help prevent the spread of germs. This worthwhile program is sponsored by a grant from Kohl’s Department Stores for Infection Control and Prevention. Thanks, Mrs. Kokal!
I am so proud to say we earned a popcorn party with Mrs. Town and Mrs. Tavernier for having the MOST fundraising envelopes returned out of all the classes at Northview! Our class got to eat popcorn, make a project, and listen to Mrs. Town read a story. They had so much fun! Thank you for your support!
We visited the Scholastic Book Fair! Thank you to all of you who purchased books. Each book purchased helps support our school!
We have buddied up with Mr. Sell's 5th graders! Each kindergartner has been matched up with a special buddy in Mr. Sell's class. We will get together with this class to read, share our work, and build the Northview community. This week, we enjoyed reading books together and getting to know our buddies!
We had a fun-filled morning celebrating fall! We played bingo, made a pumpkin craft, decorated trees with play-doh leaves, ran pumpkin relays, played a pumpkin game, ate a popcorn snack, and watched a video! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out. I feel so lucky to have such supportive families in our classroom.
The computer lab is finally open after older grades completed their testing! The kindergartners impressed me with their patience and determination during this new activity. Using a mouse is new to many students, and several wanted to swipe the computer screen! We will be visiting the computer lab each week and working on a variety of skills. This week, we went to starfall.com. This is a great website that your children can access at home.
