We had our first Managed Independent Learning time today! This independent work time is when I will eventually be pulling kids in small groups to work on reading skills. The students are working at a variety of stations around the classroom. Each student is in charge of managing his/her own learning and sharing what he/she did at the end of our workshop. Some of the stations activities include building play doh letters, drawing fall pictures, practicing letters/words on white boards, putting together name puzzles, and building our fine motor skills by using beads and tweezers. These activities will change throughout the year. They did amazing for their first day!
We have had lots of guest readers over the last days! One of my first grade friends came to read a funny story about Elephant and Piggy. Mrs. Tavernier (Instructional Assistant to Mrs. Town) read us The Most Magnificent Thing. Principal Town taught us about staying in the moment when she read us, What does it mean to be present? Thank you, readers!
Each day, we have a short rest time for about 10 minutes after lunch. I turn the lights off and play relaxing music on the smartboard. The kindergartners can relax, close their eyes, and recharge for the afternoon. They can also look at books quietly if they choose. This quiet time helps us get our afternoon off to a great start each day!
We had a fun day with many apple activities, including making our yummy applesauce, creating an apple art project, learning apple poems, and reading many apple stories. Thank you for sending an apple and helping with this fun day!
We have been busy with Writer's Workshop in kindergarten! We learned that writing stories starts with telling stories. Students have been taking turns sitting in my rocking chair and telling the whole class a story about something that he/she has done. We have heard a story about a haircut, snuggling with a brother, a fun ride down an alpine slide and many more. This celebration of oral story telling helps children understand that we all have stories to share. Last week, we started writing these stories in our Drawing and Writing Journals. Each child chose a story to "write" and drew a picture of it. We are working on adding details, and we will eventually be adding words to our stories. After each workshop, we share our work. A few students share with the whole class, and then everyone shares with a partner. They love teaching others about their work, and I love seeing the wonderful lessons they learn from their peers' work.
Choice Time is an important part of our day that encourages social skill development, such as decision making, problem solving, and initiating play with others. The students get to pick which toy/tool they will play with for the day. We love choice time!
We had our first library day! The students read a book with Mrs. Horton, and got to check out their own book. We will be visiting the library every Friday. Please help your child take good care of the library book at home, and be sure to return it by Friday the following week. Thank you for your help!
What an exciting day! When we went to pick up the gingerbread man at the cafeteria....he was gone! We went on chase around the school and had lots of help from other Northview All-Stars. Some 3rd graders even had frosting clues on their faces! Our gingerbread man was hiding in the library. We brought him back to our classroom for snack, and he was delicious! We also worked on a gingerbread man class book and an art project, too.
